Thanks for all the attempts to improve the portal. Yesterday I had a little attempt at trying to form a user-customised homepage. Here are my first few thoughts.
Personally, I prefer the general layout in the default mode, but maybe a few features could be user-customised.
The layout feels very different in the user-customised mode compared with the other display modes:
1. It does not contain the introductory paragraphs or the latest news regarding updates to the portal.
2. The Puzzle Portal image in the user-customised mode does not link to a random puzzle.
It would be nice if that random list of puzzles could be user-customised (eg a random puzzle from the observation list, or from a user-customised panel).
3. I would find it helpful to also include the "useful links" (below the Puzzle Portal image)
4. It would be nice if the list of puzzle types, authors, and labels/tags could be user-customised (and be presented like in the default mode).
Regarding the user-customised panels, it would be nice if:
1. The list of puzzles showed the difficulty and beauty rating (the activation date is also missing, but that is less important).
2. There was an option to convert an "advanced search" list of puzzles into a panel (or include it with the other "useful links").
I think this point was mentioned above by Realshaggy.
