About the story-telling - I can completely understand why you might want to do this, but story-telling in puzzles doesn't generally equate to as many rules as possible: for me the real storytelling is in the logical path. After all, that's what makes a puzzle interesting. Maybe if you toned down the ruleset a bit for your next puzzle and focused more instead on a nice logical path, your puzzle would get a lot more solves!
I definitely don't intend to make them all this way. After a week of experimenting and pondering, that's just what came out and I liked it. And still do. (And in fact I was able to drop two other rules and still have it come out.) I have others in mind that are quite a bit more straight-forward with simple rules.
