Februarrätsel 2010

Hi,

morgen Nacht geht das Monatsrätsel Februar 2010 an den Start und ab dann könnt Ihr im Eingabeformular markieren, ob ihr Computerhilfe beim Lösen benutzt habt. Was wir genau damit meinen, steht auch da. Beim Januarrätsel hat das ja richtig gut geklappt, sodass wir optimistisch sind, dass jede/R ehrlich ist. Habt ihr in einem Monat mal den Haken bei der Computerhilfe gesetzt, so kommt ihr für den Zeitraum des aktuellen Zeitraums auch nicht mehr aus der Computerliste heraus. Ich denke, so ist es dann auch OK.

Ein persönliches Wort dazu: Die Monatsrätsel werden weiterhin auch eher im Hinblick auf die Mehrheit derjenigen erstellt, die keinen Computer verwenden wollen. Ich mache mir also keine Gedanken, ob das Rätsel jetzt zu leicht oder zu schwierig für Programmierer ist, sondern habe eher die Handlöser im Auge. Wenn also jemand meint, die optimale Lösung zu schnell und zu einfach mit Computerhilfe zu finden...so setzt er sich halt mal diesen Monat mit Papier und Bleistift hin

Auch wenn es nur ein paar Minuten waren, ich durfte Manfred an Platz eins vertreten.

I think it is very fitting to honor Manfred's memory with a monthly puzzle. I had only hoped it would be a word zigzag, for me that is the puzzle type I associate Manfred with.

We will do this once again in March, during the DOM. Let's see...

It's still there. Somehow, the entry in the menu vanished, but you can still use the link in the "Eingabeformular".

It is very amazing to see that Hendrik had reached the current optimum (435 pts) only in about thirteen hours using computer. His code must be really an efficient one. I guess that he implemented a genetic algorithm for this one like he did in Januarrätsel. Genetic programming techniques may be very efficient for these kind of tasks and according to me they apply some similar changes to make improvements like solving by hand. I am also curious about if the 435 pts is the best for this puzzle. According to me there is a small possibility to see an additional improvement since the computer solvers had very long time up to now to execute their codes. But there are still 5 more days till end. It is a nice way to honour Manfred with a puzzle (or more puzzles). Thanks to MR-team for that.

Hi Zafer,

this time I started by formulating the problem as an Integer Program (IP). I was actually surprised that it was solvable in under one second: The Monatsrätsel I tried so far (since Oct. '09) were always either really hard to formulate due to complicated objective functions, or just too big to be solved by this technique. And this "hardness" made them so interesting! But this time I just spent about 1 hour on programming and even got the mathematical proof that 435 is optimal*.

So I currently ask myself what I'll do during the next months if there are puzzles again that are easily solvable by IP. Using IP again just won't be that much fun, as you get a solution really quickly and even know when it's optimal. But not using IP although you know it would solve the puzzle is kind of silly, too. So I might go for Jörg's suggestion and try to manually solve these kinds of puzzles. Besides, Ingmar and me plan to create a nice puzzle that is interesting for both pen & paper and computer solvers, if we find some time. We don't have experiences in creating puzzles, but we still hope to make some interesting suggestion to the MR-team.

P.S.: I know these puzzle are primaly created for the manual solvers. This posting is not in any way meant as a complaint!
